Rat Terrier Mixed Breeds
This purebred got its name from hunting vermin and possibly from Teddy Roosevelt calling his pooch Skip, a Rat Terrier.
Ratties were developed by many Terrier breeds such as the Smooth Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier, English White Terrier, and Bull Terrier. Feists and Italian Greyhounds helped as well.
Considering a Rat Terrier mixed breed is a good idea because they are prone to a few health problems such as hip dysplasia and patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)
Some of these issues may be less prominent and it may elongate their lifespan.
Rat Terrier hybrids will do well with ample space to exercise and play along with high-quality dog food for a long, happy, healthy life.
20 Most Popular Rat Terrier Mixes
If you want a Rat Terrier for your home and would like another dog breed to go with it, you’re in luck. We’ve compiled a list of the 20 most popular Rat Terrier mixes for you to consider.
1. Chihuahua Rat Terrier mix (AKA Ratchua Terrier)
Also known as the Rat-Cha or Chirat, this pooch is an adorable hybrid that’s protective of its family and home. They’ll make a great guard dog, despite their size.
The Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix is affectionate, loyal, loves attention, and will make an overall great family dog.
This mixed breed will typically have a short coat but could have a longer one from the Chihuahua parent.
2. Beagle Rat Terrier mix (AKA Beagat Terrier)
The Rat Terrier Beagle mix will be a great doggo to bring home. They get along well with others and are affectionate.
However, they do have a strong prey drive, so they may want to chase the cat or other small pets you may have at home.
They are curious and could be aloof from their Beagle parent, so training the Beagat Terrier will need to be met with patience.
3. Jack Russell Terrier Rat Terrier mix (AKA Jack-Rat)
Also known as the Jersey Terrier, this mixed breed may bark a lot and be stubborn. However, they’re also loyal and will be a loving companion.
They have high energy levels and will need ample space and plenty of exercise and playtime.
Be warned; this pooch has a smooth, double-coat that will shed a lot. Daily brushing to keep the loose hair at bay will be a must.
4. Dachshund Rat Terrier mix (AKA Dachrat Terrier)
The Dachshund is a unique pooch with its elongated body. They have a long spinal cord and small rib cage, leaving them pretty fragile.
If your crossbreed’s Dachshund genes are more dominant, then the Dachrat Terrier may inherit a few health issues. You’ll need to be careful when they jump up high such as on the couch or bed.
However, the Rat Terrier Dachshund mix is great with kids, energetic, and playful. They love attention but will enjoy some alone time now and then.
5. Poodle Rat Terrier mix (AKA Poorat Terrier)
The Rat Terrier mixed with a small Poodle will be an adorable small pup. They’re loving and friendly but can also be feisty and stubborn at times.
Training should be fairly easy as long as you’re firm, give plenty of positive praise, and stay consistent.
The Poorat Terrier will get along well with others as long as they are trained and socialized early and well.
6. Labrador Retriever Rat Terrier mix (AKA Labrador Terrier)
You may end up with a small or medium Labrador Terrier, depending on whether the Rat Terrier parent was a standard or a miniature breed.

Grooming needs will vary, depending on which type of coat they inherit from the parent breeds.
8. German Shepherd Rat Terrier mix (AKA German Terrier)

This doggo is playful, lively, and will make a great companion. They do love to dig, so be careful of your garden!
9. Shih Tzu Rat Terrier mix (AKA Shizurat Terrier)

11. Pitbull Rat Terrier mix (AKA Pitrat Terrier)
The Rat Terrier Pitbull crossbreed is a sweet family pet, easy to train, and intelligent. However, they are also stubborn and may be prone to separation anxiety.
This doggo does require minimal grooming, thanks to its short coat. They’re also a relatively healthy dog breed.
12. Australian Cattle Dog Rat Terrier mix
Also known as the Blue Terrier or Rat Terrier Blue Heeler mix, this hybrid is friendly, affectionate, energetic, and strong.
They’ll need a lot of exercise and playtime but will need to be kept an eye on, or else they’ll give chase as they have a strong prey drive.
Having them on a leash or letting them romp in a fenced-in yard will be great for them.
This crossbreed is also not hypoallergenic and will have moderate grooming needs.
13. Shiba Inu Rat Terrier mix
This medium pooch will have a short coat that will need weekly brushing.
They’ll make a great watchdog and guard dog as they’re loyal, obedient, and easy to train. They’re affectionate as well and will enjoy being with you.
Be warned though, they’re escape artists and will need a fenced-in yard to release their energy.
14. Yorkie Rat Terrier mix (AKA Ratshire)
This small dog is one of the smallest Rat Terrier mixes, especially if it takes after the Yorkshire Terrier.
This Ratshire will have moderate grooming needs with its medium coat.
This doggo is intelligent, affectionate, and playful. They may also have a strong prey drive, so early training and socialization will be good for them.
15. Siberian Husky Rat Terrier mix (AKA Ratsky Terrier)
The Rat Terrier mixed with Siberian Husky will need a lot of exercise, playtime, and plenty of space to move around along with mental stimulation. This will diminish their high energy level.

16. Boston Terrier Rat Terrier mix
This designer dog will make a great family companion but has a strong prey drive, so you’ll need to be careful with other small animals or cats.
The Rat Terrier Boston Terrier mix will be a small size, typically a perfect mix of both parent dog breeds.
This doggo will need moderate grooming with weekly brushing.
17. Corgi Rat Terrier mix (AKA Corgi Terrier)
The Corgi Terrier will enjoy lots of running and will need a ton of exercise to get their high energy out.

This small to medium-sized pooch will need moderate grooming.
18. Pug Rat Terrier mix (AKA Puggat)
Also known as the Puggat Terrier, this friendly pooch will get along with everyone.
They’re energetic and will love ample playtime with you. However, they have a strong prey drive, so you’ll need to keep an eye on them if they spot a squirrel.
Pugs, like Bulldogs, have short noses. If your Prug Terrier inherits its Pug parent’s facial features, they may be prone to breathing problems, especially in the heat.
19. Rat Terrier Border Collie mix (AKA Collie Terrier)
The Rat Terrier mixed with the Border Collie is a great guard dog, coming from a vermin hunting dog and a herding dog.
This medium pup will need regular brushing as they’ll have a medium to long coat, depending on what type of coat they inherit from their parent breeds.
This doggo is intelligent, easy to train, energetic, and will be an overall great family pet.
20. Cocker Spaniel Rat Terrier mix (AKA Spaniel Terrier)
The Spaniel Terrier is intelligent, energetic, and will make a great companion pup. They love attention and may cause mischief around the house to get some.
