The Corgi Husky mix’s origin
A half Corgi, half Husky mix has two of the most popular dog breeds as parents. Horgies can be bred from either of the two types of Welsh Corgis: the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Both the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Siberian Husky have a Northern spitz-type dog ancestry.
The Welsh Corgi breeds
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest breeds in the UK.
The ancestors of these short dogs are thought to have arrived in the British Isles some 3000 years ago along with the Celts.
The word corgi is derived from the Celtic word “kergie,” which means dog.
Cardigan Welsh Corgis pre-date Pembroke Welsh Corgis, which came to the in the small town of Pembroke, Wales in 1107.
Pembroke Corgis were brought to the UK by their owners, who were Belgian master craftsmen who moved to Wales at the invitation of Henry I.
These two Corgi types were often interbred and considered a single breed until at least 1934.
In the same year, Cardigan Corgis were brought to the US and the AKC recognized Cardigan Welsh Corgis and Pembroke Welsh Corgis as two distinct breeds.
One of the biggest differences between the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is that the former usually has its tail docked, while the latter has a full tail.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is also known today for being the favorite breed of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Corgi is well-liked because of its friendly, outgoing, and playful nature. They are originally herding dogs who are also loved for their loyalty and trustworthiness.
Corgis are also extremely alert and attentive. They love being around people and may not take well to being alone for an extended period of time.
The Siberian Husky
The Chukchi people of Northeast Asia first bred the ancestors of the Siberian Husky for use as sled runners as well as family companions.
Along with the Samoyed and the Alaskan Malamute, the Husky is directly descended from these ancient sled dogs.
Throughout history, Siberian Huskies have helped tribes expand their hunting grounds for survival.
In 1908, Huskies were brought to Alaska for sled-racing. The breed endeared itself to the public when a relay of Siberian Huskies, led by Leonhard Seppala, completed a 658-mile run in 5 and a half days to bring a serum to cure diphtheria in Nome, Alaska.
The Husky is known for its endurance and strength as well as its friendly and gentle temperament. This dog is one of the most loyal and reliable of all breeds.
What does a Corgi Husky mix look like?
The Siborgi has a rounded and fox-like shaped head, with almond-shaped eyes and upright ears.
Most Horgies have a small to medium-sized build, a long, stocky body, stubby, sturdy legs, and a curled up or curved tail.
The Corgi Husky mix has a straight medium-length coat that is resistant to water.
Its coat may come in an array of colors, including red, sable, gray, dark brown, brindle, fawn, tan, black, cream, orange, white, blue, and silver.
Some of these crossbreeds may have the agouti coloring (similar to brindle, with cream markings) of their Husky parent. You may also get a Horgi with a pure white coat if a Corgi is bred with a White Husky.
How big can a Horgi get?
This crossbreed often resembles a large Welsh Corgi or a small Siberian Husky.
The Corgi Husky mix has an average weight of 20 to 50 pounds (9 to 23 kg) and stands between 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 cm) in height.
What is the personality of a Corgsky?
This crossbreed has a sweet temperament and he loves to be around people. He is friendly and trusting and he gets along well with kids and other animals when properly socialized.
Inheriting his parents’ best traits, he is loyal and will always put others first. His overall personality is ideal for families, but he may be more suited for families with older children because of his size.
And while the Horgi is loving and affectionate, he may also display some cautious tendencies. The good news is that he is an intelligent canine and is easily trained out of undesirable behaviors.
Here is an amusing video of Seph, a Siborgi, as he “attacks” a rogue sprinkler.
Thee crossbreeds are always on high alert and are excellent guard dogs. They are occasional to frequent barkers, but you can curb this behavior through training.
Don’t let his size fool you; this dog uses an impressive howl, like its Husky parent, when he sees strangers or when he senses something is off.
How much activity does the Corgi Husky mix need?
Regular exercise ensures that Corgsky dogs remain well-behaved and keeps their temperament in check. These hybrids require at least 60-minute walks every day for physical and mental stimulation.
It is also essential for these crossbreeds to have ample playtime and socialization. For instance, a three-hour romp with other dogs in the park is a good way to familiarize your dog with new environments while using up its energy.
Interactive toys also help with Siborgis’ mental development, keeping them from getting bored.
Playing fetch and doing treasure hunts are good ways to keep this hybrid’s mind and body active.
How to train Horgi puppies
The Siborgi is moderately easy to train since he is eager to please his owner. It is important to note that owners of these canines should only use positive reinforcement.
These dogs respond best to praise and rewards. They can have a stubborn side to them, but it can be corrected with proper training.
Like with many dogs their size, these hybrids may present challenges in housebreaking. You may also find that your Corgsky likes to herd people by nipping at their heels, but you can control this behavior.
Gentleness, consistency, and early training will be most helpful if you want to achieve the best results.
Because of their intelligence and eagerness to please, these furballs are the perfect pets for a new owner.
The importance of crate training
You must fully understand that crate training can be helpful for the Siborgi puppy. Many veterinarians recommend using a crate for your dog while it’s young.
Crates provide your dog with a safe space and make it easier for you to instill good habits in him. A crate can be used as a tool for house-training, preventing your dog from chewing up your furniture and belongings, and keeping him calm during car trips.
Your Horgi’s crate should be large enough for him to stand and turn around in. There must be good airflow and lighting within the crate so your pup will be as comfortable as possible.
Crate training is especially helpful for your puppy if you live in an apartment.
Grooming: how much does a Corgi Husky mix need?
The Siborgi puppy sheds a lot because of its double coat.
He should be brushed on a daily basis to keep his fur neat and his skin free from allergens that cause irritation.
Besides, you don’t want your house to be overrun by layers and layers of dog fur.
(Because of its frequent shedding, the Corgi Husky mix is not hypoallergenic. You may want to look for another crossbreed if you suffer from allergies to dander.)
Bathtime should be only a monthly routine for the Horgi. Use a vet-recommended dog shampoo and conditioner to keep his coat shiny and healthy and prevent skin irritation.
Lathering the Siborgi puppy’s coat may take a bit of effort since it is water-resistant. It may also take time for you to dry your dog after a bath because of its thick fur.
Nail clipping can be tricky, and, if you are not sure how to do it properly, ask your vet for advice or let an expert groomer do it. Clipping the nails of a Horgi should be done regularly.
Daily brushing of the teeth is a must since smaller dogs are more prone to dental health issues. Clean your dog’s teeth at least twice a week or daily with a dog-friendly toothpaste or a water-baking soda paste mix and a child’s toothbrush.
Your dog’s ears should be inspected weekly and cleaned once daily using damp cotton balls.
The Corgsky’s health issues
Like most small dogs, a Horgi is prone to quick weight gain. He is also predisposed to have back problems because of his long body and short legs.
Plus, there are some diseases that this crossbreed will inherit from his parents:
- Intervertebral disc disease (back problems)
- Skin problems
- Epilepsy
- Eye problems
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Patent ductus arteriosus or PDA
- Von Willebrand’s Disease
- Hip dysplasia
You can minimize the risk of these conditions by giving your Siborgi puppy a well-balanced diet and keeping him active through regular exercise. Make sure to bring him to the vet for regular physical examinations and keep his shots up-to-date.
The Horgi’s life expectancy
These are generally healthy canines, despite their long list of potential health concerns.
Many of these health issues can be prevented with a proper diet and daily exercise, while genetic conditions can be diagnosed through early health screening.
The Corgi Husky mix should have a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years, if taken care of properly.
Nutritional needs: the Corgi Husky mix’s diet
A low-calorie, protein-rich feeding plan is essential in keeping your puppy at a healthy weight. All dogs require protein in their diet to support muscle growth and strengthen bones and joints.
It’s also important that you monitor your dog’s daily calorie intake, especially since its size makes the Horgi prone to obesity.
Give your pup ¾ to 1½ cups of high-quality dry dog food, dividing this amount into two meals per day.
You can also feed your Corgi-Husky mix chicken liver, rice, sweet potatoes, coconut oil, and other dog-friendly, nutritious food to add variety to his diet.
Avoid unhealthy and digestive system-damaging grains like soy, wheat, and corn.
You also need to take into consideration the treats you give your dog when counting his calorie intake.
Eighty percent of the calories should come from the kibble, while as much as twenty percent could account for treats and other foods like olives, tuna, and sunflower seeds.
Consult your vet about the best dog food for your Corgi Husky mix so you can make sure he gets the right amount of calories for his age and activity level.
How much does a Horgi cost?
A Corgi Husky mix puppy may cost around $300 to $1000, on average.
Annual medical expenses like check-ups, flea prevention, and neutering or spaying may range between $485 to $600, while non-medical yearly costs like a license, training, and food will be around $500 to $600.
