Beagle Growth Chart Guide

Beagles are a small dog breed with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. These little doggies are pure bundles of joy as they are playful, affectionate, and intelligent.

They can be quite independent and have amazing personalities. They are very curious and fun-loving, with an energetic nature and a muscular build.

But just how big will your Beagle get? In this article, we will take a closer look at the different sizes of this breed, the growth and development of your puppy, and what to do if your Beagle is over or underweight.

Overview: A Few Fun Facts About the Beagle

The Beagle breed is part of the Hound group and was originally bred in England to hunt hares and rabbits. They have an excellent sense of smell which makes them ideal hunting dogs.

Thanks to their long, floppy ears that help them to concentrate and funnel scents towards their noses.

Beagles are currently the third most popular dog breed. Because of their friendly nature and small size, they make great companion pets for families with children.

But as they have a strong prey drive due to their ancestor hunting instincts, they may cause trouble with other smaller pets.

Generally, Beagles are naturally high-vocal dogs. They are known for their distinctively melodic howls and barks which can be bothersome if you live in close quarters with your neighbors.

However, well-trained and socialized Beagles can be pure joy and wonderful companions for a long time, as they have a long life expectancy.

A Beagle bitch carries her pups for nine weeks before giving birth. The puppies’ eyes and ears remain closed, and they must stay very close to their moms to absorb their body heat in the first few days.

They grow so fast that by the end of the first week, they will have doubled in weight.

They start opening their eyes by the second week. By the third week, their eyesight will have increased, and they will try to stand up and walk a few steps.

Now, they will start socializing with their littermates and mother. At this time, they only weigh between 1.5 and 2 pounds (0.7 and 0.9 kg).

Beagles also start socializing with humans, which you can do by touching their paws and holding them tenderly and gently.

Weaning will also start now. Other than their mother’s milk, soft food can be introduced to his diet. At four weeks of age, they may weigh 2 to 3 pounds (0.9 to 1.4 kg)

During the first eight weeks, the Beagle puppy is taught basic doggy skills by its mother and littermates.

Biting and nipping is the thing to do now for the puppy, but being with its mom will make him realize that it is not the correct way to interact.

Curiosity makes them explore more, and they begin to wander further from the litter box.

Their food consists of a mush of puppy food and milk as weaning is almost done now. The pup starts to respond to its name and responds to different noises. Playtime with their human family spells fun, and they love the connection.

At eight weeks, he is at the correct age for it to be taken away from his mother and for a new owner to take it to his new family. An eight-week-old Beagle pup will weigh about 4 to 8 pounds (1.8 to 3.6 kg).

12-week-old (3-month-old)

They start to realize what is safe and unsafe, and they start to be more confident and act more independently.

They know their name well now and will begin to get used to the house-training rules. They will also respond to simple commands.

General training can easily start, as they are very intelligent. Biting hands should be discouraged, and instead, give them more toys to play with.

They should also have their third de-worming treatment now. The male Beagles weigh 7 to 11 pounds (3.2 to 5 kg) and stand 8 to 11 inches (20.3 to 28 cm) tall.

Females weigh 6.5 to 10 pounds (3 to 4.5 kg), while their height is about 7 to 10 inches (17.7 to 25.4 cm)

Be sure to gradually change your dog’s food to get used to the new food. The last de-worming also has to be done at this stage.

Your Beagle will weigh about 10 to 16 pounds (4.5 to 7.3 kg), and he will measure between 8 and 12 inches (20.3 and 30.5 cm) tall. At this time, a female pup’s first heat might occur as sexual maturity for both males and females occurs.

Things You Should Know About Your Beagle’s Growth

The size of a Beagle determines its growth, height, and weight. There are also different maturity milestones for dogs.

First comes the newborn stage, then the first eight weeks when they are still with their mommy, then the young puppy stage from eight weeks to six months when they are adjusting to their new home, then from 6 months to 1 year, we have the maturing puppy.

Most Beagle puppies grow rapidly until 12 months and then slow down considerably. Their growth plates will only be fully closed at the age of 18 months.

By 18 months, he is considered a young adult. From 3 to 9 years, they are fully adults and reasonably calm. They are considered seniors between 9 and 10 years old.

A Beagle’s final size is determined greatly by genetics, while nutrition, exercise, and health all play a role.

How do I make sure my pup is healthy?

To determine the weight of a Beagle, one can use this formula: Weight at 14 weeks x 2.5 = approximate adult weight.

Using your bathroom scale, you can determine your dog’s weight. Step onto it and record the number. Take your Beagle in your arms, and stepping onto the scale, take the number again.

Finally, you have to subtract your weight from that of you with the dog to get the accurate weight for your pup.

When looking at your Beagle from above, the inclination in its waist should be seen. Right around the waist, his body should go thinner.

Although the ribs should not be sticking out, you should be able to feel its ribs easily with your fingers. Because of their barrel-shaped chest, Beagles appear stouter than they are.

Health issues that can influence your puppy’s growth

There are a few health issues that can influence a Beagle puppy’s growth. Spaying or neutering too early might influence his growth badly, for it can affect the growth plates that are not closed and cause bone defects. They can grow larger and taller than the standard measurements.

For this breed, spaying or neutering is recommended to be done between the ages of six and nine months. The wise thing to do in this situation is to consult your vet to find the exact time to spay or neuter your dog.

Intestinal parasites or worms could also affect a puppy’s growth while weight gain can be caused by health conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism.

Beagles should be fed the right quality and quantity of food at the right frequency to ensure healthy growth. They should also have a well-balanced diet to develop and grow appropriately.

Due to their energetic nature, they need enough exercise to have a positive effect on their growth.

How to help Beagles lose or gain weight?

Beagles are very prone to become overweight, which can lead to health problems. So, to help them, you have to be vigilant and check what they eat. Don’t leave food lying where they can find it.

If your dog is overweight, you can try and help him lose weight by making his food supply smaller than usual. Rather give him carrots, green beans, or peas as alternatives to regular dog treats.

Fruit can also be of great benefit as an alternative to other store-bought dog treats, for it contains fewer calories.

Dividing your dog’s meals into smaller portions might be an excellent way to help him lose weight. Some more exercise for your dog should also be added to your usual routine.

It will also be a good idea to take him to the vet, as there might be underlying health conditions to be acted on.

If your Beagle is underweight, it’s recommended that you visit the vet with your pup to test for underlying medical conditions.

You can begin by offering him more frequent meals and changing the feeding schedule. Perhaps, you can find different treats that will appeal to him.

Adding pumpkin or sweet potato to his diet can boost fat and fiber. More protein like real meat and even some fat can also be added to his daily food intake.

Wet or fresh foods might be more beneficial and perhaps also preferable to your pup.

Also, make sure that he is not competing with other pets to eat. Rather allow it to eat alone to ensure that he is fed sufficiently. This will also help reduce stress.

Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth

Most of the causes of stunted growth in a Beagle can be cured. Some of the damage can’t be undone, but good nutrition will be very beneficial. Parasites and intestinal worms can be treated by a vet.

Dangers of stunted growth are a dull-looking coat, poor body condition, horrendous eating without gaining weight, an out-of-proportion big belly, impaired development, brain damage, and in extreme cases, without any treatment, death can occur.

Accelerated growth, on the other side, can cause skeletal deformities, obesity, shortened life expectancy, heart problems, and painful joints, muscle wasting, hip dysplasia, and difficulty in walking.

When do Beagles stop growing?

A Beagle is fully matured and fully grown by 18 months. This is the time when all the plates are closed, and they don’t grow anymore.

The optimal weight for males is 22 to 24 pounds (10 to 11 kg) and 20 and 22 pounds (9 and 10 kg) for females.

Conclusion: How Big Will My Beagle Get?

How big your pup will get depends on your type of Beagle. According to the AKC, there are two Beagle breeds, a larger and smaller size.

Pocket Beagles also exist, although there is some debate as to if these Beagles are purebred as they are not recognized by the AKC.

No matter which size you choose, you are guaranteed a playful, energetic dog full of personality. These dogs are also exceptionally intelligent with a perfect sense of smell.

During your dog’s growth and development, you’ll need to feed him good quality dog food, provide him with sufficient exercise and take him for regular vet checkups to ensure he grows appropriately.
