What exactly is a Malamute Pitbull mix?

It’s all in the name – a cross between the Alaskan Malamute and Pitbull. And like most mixed breeds, there’s not much information about when they originated.

Some say that their history started around the late 1800s or early 1900s.

We may not find any info from top kennel clubs or canine organizations about this breed, but we can find out how the Mally Pit would turn out in terms of appearance and temperament by getting to know its parents.

Meet the Alaskan Malamute

Getting its name from the Mahluemuts Innuit tribe who inhabited Alaska’s northwest coast, the Alaskan Malamute has been in existence for over 4,000 years.

Their humans relied on them as a means of transport and to power sleds, while also helping in hunting seals and bears.

Then they assisted prospectors on the West Coast during the Gold Rush, but it’s also the same time where the breed became diluted.

Breeders started mixing them with smaller canines so that they can be used for racing.

By the 1920s, the purebred variety was successfully revived, and Malamutes eventually got recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1935.

Adorably called Pittie, this purebred was developed in Staffordshire’s English region for dogfighting in the 1800s.

Originally called “Bull and Terrier,” they’re known to be a mix between various Terrier breeds and the Old English Bulldog.

Once dog fighting was outlawed, Pitbulls became less popular.

But some of them found their way to the US in the 19th century, where breeders made them into a canine with a larger head and more heft. They’re now known as Pit Bull Terriers.

The AKC recognized them in 1936, and after 30 years or so, they were formally renamed to American Staffordshire Terrier.

What does an Alaskan Pitbull look like?

As with any crossbreed, the Malamute Pitbull mix can take after its purebred parents’ physical qualities. They generally have powerful, lean bodies.

All those muscles are evident throughout their deep chests, sturdy legs, up to their medium-length tail.

Their eyes can be blue, brown, or hazel, while their square muzzle can only have a nose that’s either black or brown.

If a Mally Pit takes after the Malamute, then it will have erect ears. Those who are more like the Pitbull have small, pendant ears.

Size: How big does a Pitbull Malamute mix get?

The Alaskan Malamute Pitbull mix is a medium- to large-sized dog with a height of 16 to 26 inches (41 to 66 cm) and weighs 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kg).

Mally Pit puppies are considered full-grown at 18 months of age before reaching these measurements, and females are typically smaller than males.

With their size and energy level in mind, this mixed breed will do best in rural areas or homes where they can access large yards or outdoor space.

This fido’s coat and color can be unpredictable, too!

Malamute & Pitbull cross have short, dense coats that are soft to the touch, but they come in various colors.

You can find them in black, blue, red, white, silver, and fawn. They can also have a brindle, sable, and agouti pattern.

Others may or may not have a mask, spots, points, or other markings.

Temperament: Are Pitbull Malamute mix dogs aggressive?

We can answer this question with a straight no. In fact, no dog is inherently aggressive, not unless they were abused or mistreated, which makes them always fearful or ready to fight.

Alaskan Malamute-Pitbull mixes are incredibly devoted and affectionate family pets.

They love being with the company of their humans and furry siblings. You can even expect them to get along with kids and other dogs or pets, as long as they were socialized and trained early.

Overall, they develop strong bonds with everyone in their home. They love cuddles that they’ll give love whenever they can.

It’s best to be cautious when this pooch is around little ones and older people because they might not be aware of their size during playtime.

This video will show you that a Malamute Pitbull mix isn’t hyperactive, but they’re quite big even as puppies:

We also recommend them to those who have experience owning canines who have a bold and confident character.

If you’re a first-time owner and you decide to get this fido, it will surely try to run the show. They also tend to be independent, so you should know when a Mally Pit wants some time and space alone.

Caring for your Pitbull-Malamute dog

Malamute Pitbull mixes are highly active, just like their energetic parents. Since they’re known for their vitality and endurance, at least an hour of exercise a day will suffice for this doggo.

You can think of other ways to keep your Pitbull & Alaskan Malamute cross in shape. Aside from walks, take him to the dog park or teach him new tricks.

You can also organize a game where the whole family is involved. Don’t forget to add in some toys, like puzzles, for mental stimulation.

Just make sure that it isn’t too hot or too cold when having some outdoor fun.

This breed may thrive in almost all types of climates, but it doesn’t mean he won’t overheat while playing under the sun or feel too cold running in the snow.

How about your dog’s diet? The Malamute-Pitbull mix should be fed 2.5 to 3 cups of high-quality dry kibbles daily. An active canine like this would require food that’s packed with protein to keep them going.

If you prefer to feed your fido based on his daily caloric requirement, you can use this calorie calculator to compute how much he needs based on weight.

But the type of dog food you feed your fur buddy should also be based on his size, metabolism, and health.

How to groom a Malamute Pitbull mix

They’re not hypoallergenic dogs, but thanks to their relatively short coat, grooming wouldn’t be quite a chore. They have easy to maintain fur that sheds moderately.

Control shedding with a weekly brushing using a slicker brush.

Baths should only be done once a month to prevent the natural oils on your pet’s coat from drying. But if they’re particularly stinky or dirty from playing outside, it means they need a wash.

Choose a shampoo that smells and does good for your Mally Pit’s fur.

Other grooming routines that your Alaskan Pitbull should get used to is weekly ear cleaning, daily teeth brushing, and monthly nail clipping.

Are Alaskan Malamute Pit mixes healthy?

Malamute and Pitbull Terrier crosses are pretty robust, with a lifespan of up to 15 years. But they can still inherit health problems that their parents are susceptible to.

Some severe illnesses to watch out for are Chondrodysplasia (Chd) and canine hip dysplasia. There’s also cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and skin issues.

This doesn’t mean that your Alaskan Pitbull will get all these diseases, but it’s best to be aware and take necessary precautions to ensure that your pet is healthy.

If you already have this mixed breed or you’re still planning to buy, there are occasional tests recommended for them to get. Some of those include ocular exam, orthopedic exam, skin biopsy, X-rays, and CT scans.
