Meet the Alaskan Malamute

Getting its name from the Mahluemuts Innuit tribe who inhabited Alaska’s northwest coast, the Alaskan Malamute has been in existence for over 4,000 years.

Their humans relied on them as a means of transport and to power sleds, while also helping in hunting seals and bears.

Then they assisted prospectors on the West Coast during the Gold Rush, but it’s also the same time where the breed became diluted.

Breeders started mixing them with smaller canines so that they can be used for racing.

By the 1920s, the purebred variety was successfully revived, and Malamutes eventually got recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1935.

Meet the American Pit Bull Terrier

Adorably called Pittie, this purebred was developed in Staffordshire’s English region for dogfighting in the 1800s.

Originally called “Bull and Terrier,” they’re known to be a mix between various Terrier breeds and the Old English Bulldog.

Once dog fighting was outlawed, Pitbulls became less popular.

But some of them found their way to the US in the 19th century, where breeders made them into a canine with a larger head and more heft. They’re now known as Pit Bull Terriers.

The AKC recognized them in 1936, and after 30 years or so, they were formally renamed to American Staffordshire Terrier.

The Alaskan Malamute Pitbull mix is a medium- to large-sized dog with a height of 16 to 26 inches (41 to 66 cm) and weighs 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kg).

Mally Pit puppies are considered full-grown at 18 months of age before reaching these measurements, and females are typically smaller than males.

With their size and energy level in mind, this mixed breed will do best in rural areas or homes where they can access large yards or outdoor space.

Baths should only be done once a month to prevent the natural oils on your pet’s coat from drying. But if they’re particularly stinky or dirty from playing outside, it means they need a wash.

Are Alaskan Malamute Pit mixes healthy?

Malamute and Pitbull Terrier crosses are pretty robust, with a lifespan of up to 15 years. But they can still inherit health problems that their parents are susceptible to.

Some severe illnesses to watch out for are Chondrodysplasia (Chd) and canine hip dysplasia. There’s also cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and skin issues.

This doesn’t mean that your Alaskan Pitbull will get all these diseases, but it’s best to be aware and take necessary precautions to ensure that your pet is healthy.
